‘I Call Him All-rounder’, Sunil Gavaskar Made A Blunt Verdict On KL Rahul vs Pant Debate

Team India had a decent performance in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2022 where India was knocked out in the semifinal after a loss in Semi-Final. Now the team is cruising ahead for the 2023 ODI World Cup and a lot of issues in the team need to be solved. However, the biggest concern remains the same, which is the wicketkeeper’s role for team India.

From Rishabh Pant to Dinesh Karthik and Sanju Samson and now KL Rahul, the performance with the gloves has been one of the bottlenecks for the team. Ishan Kishan is also among the contenders to seal their duties behind the wickets. In the first ODI against Bangladesh, KL Rahul dropped an easy catch that cost India a loss.

Former Indian legendary batter Sunil Gavaskar has given a blunt word on the wicketkeepers of India. He claims that KL Rahul gives India the freedom to take an extra bowler as well and he could be the finisher for India batting at no.5 and no.6.

While speaking to Sony Sports during the first ODI, Gavaskar said, “He has been batting for India at No.5 with Dhawan and Rohit Sharma opening the batting most of the time and Virat Kohli at No.3. He has been batting at No.5 for a while now. Maybe that is the position that he is looking to consolidate. What that does is it gives India the extra option.”

Little Master further added, “If you have somebody as a middle-order option who can keep wickets then you can look at taking another bowler. I call him an all-rounder because he can keep wickets, can open the batting, and can bat at No.5. KL Rahul is an all-rounder as far as I am concerned. And someone like him with the kind of experience he has and the range of shots he has, he is the kind of finisher you want at No.5 or 6.”
