The Psychology of Limited IPL Chances: Insights from Mitchell Santner

New Zealand star Mitchell Santner said that he has to deal with frustration. The left-arm spinner has been in CSK’s dugout since 2018 but has only played 16 matches for the side so far.

Santner did not get a chance to feature in playing 11 for CSK in 2018 but finally got the opportunity to make his debut against the Rajasthan Royals in 2019. Santner has so far scored 67 runs and picked up 14 wickets at an astonishing economy of 6.69.

Santner spoke about getting fewer chances for Chennai in a video released by Franchise. The star player said, “Yeah, I guess that’s the challenge of not playing all the time. It might be frustrating at times, but I think it’s trying to stay focused if you are not playing. What I try to do is help the other boys out, whether it’s at training or during the game, and even have conversations with people.”

In the 2024 season, So far, Santner has played only one match for the franchise, but he feels that even if he gets a couple of chances, he doesn’t want to let his side down.

Santner said, “And then, I guess, when you do get your opportunity, it’s not letting the team down; it’s making sure you are ready for that whenever it comes. It’s such a long tournament. So, if it is only 2 games, I am going to try my best for those 2 games, and if it’s cooler, if it’s not, I am happy; it’s all about the team’s success for me.”

After featuring in the IPL, Santner will be seen in action for New Zealand, as they are set to play against Afghanistan on June 7.
