In cricket, meticulous planning and strategic decisions often distinguish between victory and defeat. Bangladesh’s cricket captain, Shakib Al Hasan, finds himself facing a crucial decision regarding the participation of key players in an upcoming series against New Zealand. As the cricketing world awaits the World Cup, Shakib’s approach to resting his star players for the impending clash with New Zealand showcases his commitment to ensuring a formidable and injury-free squad.
The New Zealand cricket team, set to face Bangladesh in three One Day Internationals (ODIs), has sent an understrength squad. This move is undoubtedly intended to give valuable exposure to fringe players and explore their options ahead of the World Cup.
In response to New Zealand’s decision, Shakib Al Hasan, Bangladesh’s captain and a stalwart of the game, has expressed his reservations about allowing New Zealand to test their bench strength against Bangladesh’s top unit. He believes the players who will be part of the World Cup squad should be rested, especially those currently participating in the Asia Cup in Sri Lanka.
Shakib’s perspective is grounded in the understanding that injuries can be detrimental in a tournament as significant as the World Cup. The competition involves practice matches and extensive travel, placing physical demands on players. Player fitness is paramount for Bangladesh, which may not boast extensive bench strength.
“I personally believe that those who played in the Asia Cup could be rested from the New Zealand series, especially those who are confirmed for the World Cup,” Shakib stated in an interview with ESPNcricinfo.
He stressed the importance of having all four of their fast bowlers in prime condition, particularly with the unfortunate absence of Ebadot Hossain.
While Bangladesh is yet to finalize its World Cup squad, Shakib Al Hasan remains committed to exploring options in the series against New Zealand. He sees this as an opportunity to identify players who can seamlessly fit into the team’s dynamics.

“We cannot afford injuries in that big tournament, which involves practice matches and lots of travel. We don’t have a lot of bench strength. It is very important for us that players are fit and healthy for the World Cup. I want all four of our fast bowlers to remain fit, now that Ebadot [Hossain] is out.” Shakib remarked.
The cricketing world will watch as Bangladesh and New Zealand lock horns in their third game of the World Cup in Chennai on October 13.
