Sunil Gavaskar, Ganguly And Pathan Divided Over Yuzvendra Chahal’s Exclusion From India’s Asia Cup Squad

The announcement of the Indian cricket team’s 17-member squad for the upcoming Asia Cup has ignited discussions and raised eyebrows, particularly due to the notable absence of Yuzvendra Chahal, the wrist-spinning dynamo.

As fans and cricket pundits dissect the selection choices, opinions diverge on whether this decision signals the end of Chahal’s international career or leaves the door for a potential return to the squad for the highly anticipated World Cup 2023.

Skipper Rohit Sharma and BCCI chief selector Ajit Agarkar announced India’s Asia Cup squad. The selection carried an intriguing message. This squad is likely to be the core group that will represent India in the World Cup scheduled shortly after the Asia Cup. KL Rahul and Shreyas Iyer, who were dealing with injuries, found a spot in the team, offering some relief to fans.

The most striking omission from the squad was Yuzvendra Chahal, the leg-spinning maestro who has been a key asset for India in limited-overs cricket. The management’s preference for Kuldeep Yadav over Chahal sparked varied responses. While Australia’s Matthew Hayden labelled it a “big omission,” former India captain Sourav Ganguly and ex-India all-rounder Irfan Pathan questioned the decision. The absence of Chahal from the Asia Cup squad stirred debates about whether his exclusion was tactical or signalled a potential shift in India’s spin-bowling strategy.

“There’re some big omissions. Chahal, in particular, that leg-spinner, is such a superb player, and (it) must be tough for the selectors because they’ve also got another one in Kuldeep (Yadav)…. he’s a superb player. So, they’ve gone for that as an option,” PTI quoted Matthew Hayden as saying.

“I would pick Chahal. I would always pick wrist-spinners,” Ganguly told Hindustan Times in an interview.

Pathan, on the other hand, expressed his views on social media, where he wrote: “Worry for selectors that Bumrah and Prasidh coming back from long lay off. That’s one of the two reasons you will see Indian team playing with an extra bowler who can bat. I would have Chahal in my squad. What do you guys think?”

“Sometimes you’re looking at the balance of the team. Maybe, you can say that Kuldeep is a handy batter down the order, so maybe that’s why he gets the nod ahead of Chahal. Also, he brings a left-hand variety.” Gavaskar to India Today.

The selectors’ rationale for favouring Kuldeep Yadav over Chahal is multifaceted. Some experts believe Kuldeep’s left-arm spin provides a unique variety, which can be valuable in certain match situations. Kuldeep’s batting prowess and ability to contribute down the order might have given him an edge in balancing the team.

The question that looms is whether Yuzvendra Chahal’s omission is permanent or if there is a window for his return. The press conference held by the Indian skipper hinted at an open door for Chahal, R Ashwin, and Washington Sundar to stake their claim for the World Cup squad. The World Cup, scheduled for October 5, allows for potential adjustments and additions.

Chahal’s exclusion raises questions about the team’s spin-bowling dynamics. India’s spin options are diverse, with the likes of Ravindra Jadeja and Rahul Chahar in the fray. Returning to the squad remains plausible if Chahal regains form and delivers standout performances.
