“Mohammed Shami came to drop me off at the airport…”: Wasim Akram Revealed The Secret Behind Shami’s Success

The ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 has been a spectacle of outstanding performances, and among the standout players, Mohammed Shami has emerged as a shining star. Leading the charts with an incredible 23 wickets in just six matches, Shami’s prowess with the ball has been a key factor in India’s journey in the tournament.

Shami’s defining moment came in the semi-finals against New Zealand, where his exceptional bowling performance earned him the prestigious Player of the Match award. He claimed a staggering 7/57 against the Blackcaps, etching his name in history as the Indian with the best figures in ODIs.

Former Pakistan skipper and legendary fast bowler Wasim Akram shared insights into Shami’s early days when he was under Akram’s guidance as the bowling coach of the IPL franchise Kolkata Knight Riders in 2011-12. Akram reminisced about Shami’s eagerness to learn and play first-class cricket for Bengal despite not being from the region.

“I don’t remember the exact year, and it must be 2011-12 maybe, a young kid who was playing first-class from Bengal because I think he is not from Bengal, he lives…I forgot his city’s name. He (Mohammed Shami) told me he comes from a political family, who are involved in local politics, and he was very eager,” recalled Wasim Akram.

Shami’s background, belonging to a political family, added an intriguing dimension to his cricketing journey. Despite not being a native of Bengal, Shami’s commitment to playing for the region showcased his determination and passion for the sport. Wasim Akram highlighted Shami’s enthusiasm as a young cricketer keen on making a mark.

Wasim Akram also shared a heartwarming incident from his time with Shami in the IPL. When Akram had to abruptly return to Pakistan during the season, Shami went out of his way to drop him off at the airport and later picked him up upon his return. These off-the-field gestures reflected the camaraderie and respect that Shami earned from his mentors.

Akram also touched upon the camaraderie between Shami and other Kolkata Knight Riders players, including Suryakumar Yadav and Kuldeep Yadav. The trio, under Akram’s guidance, contributed to the team’s success during their time together in the IPL.

“I remember that when my kids were young and I had to take a break of 2-3 days to return to Pakistan and meet them, he came to drop me off at the airport and also received me when I returned. He said, ‘I wanted to spend time with you’, he, Kuldeep, SKY all these guys were very young and very eager to learn,” added Akram.

“Whatever Shami is today is because of his own hard work. If he learned something from me then credit him for how much he was hungry. He used to ask questions regarding batting and bowling then I said ‘You should not leave training when I will be gone for three days, I’ll return and check’. So whatever he has achieved till now is absolutely his hard work and his mind. So well done, we are proud of you Shami,” he concluded.
