“Placing a foot on the trophy…”: Indian Pacer Shami On Mitchell Marsh’s World Cup Trophy Celebration

The cricket world was left buzzing as Australia secured their sixth World Cup title by defeating India in a thrilling final at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. However, the triumph was overshadowed by controversy when a viral image surfaced depicting Australian cricketer Mitchell Marsh placing his legs on the prestigious World Cup trophy during the celebration.

Australia’s victory in the World Cup final was nothing short of dominant. Bowling first, they restricted India to a modest total of 240 runs despite noteworthy half-centuries from Virat Kohli and KL Rahul. In response, Australia found themselves at 47 for three before a spectacular 192-run partnership between Travis Head and Marnus Labuschagne secured their title. Head’s impressive 137 and Labuschagne’s unbeaten 58 were instrumental in their triumph.

The moment that stirred controversy occurred after the World Cup final. A photograph circulated on social media, capturing Mitchell Marsh placing both of his legs on the World Cup trophy in celebration. This unconventional gesture sparked immediate criticism, with many viewing it as disrespectful to the trophy and the spirit of the game.

Indian star Mohammed Shami openly expressed his disappointment with Mitchell Marsh’s celebration. In an interview with PUMA India, Shami conveyed his upset feelings, particularly highlighting the act of placing a foot on the prestigious trophy, an emblem every cricket team aspires to lift.

“I feel upset. Placing a foot on the trophy, the one every team competes for, the trophy you dream of raising, didn’t make me happy,” Mohammed Shami said in an interview with PUMA India.

While addressing the controversial celebration, Mohammed Shami reflected on his outstanding performance in the World Cup. Despite not playing the first four games, Shami emerged as the highest wicket-taker, claiming an impressive 24 wickets in seven matches, including three five-wicket hauls.

Shami shared insights into his approach to bowling, emphasizing the importance of simplicity and relaxation. He explained his tendency to avoid close inspection of the pitch, focusing on performance rather than unnecessary pressure. Shami highlighted the mental strength required when benched for several matches and expressed satisfaction in witnessing the team’s positive direction.

“Usually, bowlers inspect the pitch upon reaching the ground. I avoid getting close to the wicket because you truly understand its behavior only when you start bowling. Why add unnecessary pressure? It’s better to stay simple and relaxed, and that’s when you’ll perform better. When you’re benched for four matches, you must stay mentally strong. There might be moments of pressure, but witnessing the team excel and moving positively brings satisfaction,” said Mohammed Shami.
