Injury Update: Prithvi Shaw Will Miss Domestic Trophies, No Need For Surgery

Cricket fans received relief with the latest reports indicating that Prithvi Shaw’s scans have unveiled a Grade 2 Posterior Cruciate Ligament (PCL) injury, eliminating the need for surgery.

Unfortunately, the young cricketer’s remarkable performance with Northamptonshire in the One-Day Cup in England was interrupted when he suffered a knee injury while fielding against Durham, forcing him to bow out of the season.

Shaw’s stint in the One-Day Cup had been outstanding, with impressive scores of 34, 26, 244, and a sensational unbeaten 125*. His batting prowess positioned him as the highest run-scorer after four games, accumulating a remarkable 429 runs. However, his campaign ended abruptly due to a knee injury.

A source close to Prithvi Shaw, currently undergoing treatment in the UK, revealed that the scans had indicated a Grade 2 PCL injury. While Grade 2 is not the most favourable news, it’s a more promising prognosis than a Grade 3 injury. Fortunately for Shaw, the injury doesn’t warrant surgical intervention, raising hopes for his swift return to the cricket field.

“The result of the scans has revealed that it’s a Grade 2 PCL injury. Grade 2 is not that encouraging, but still better than Grade 3. Things were initially not looking good for Prithvi, but a Grade 2 injury and no need of surgery means he should be back on the field soon,” said a source close to the cricketer, as quoted by CricketNext News18.

The same source disclosed that the 23-year-old batter would remain in the United Kingdom for some time, indicating that his recovery would be under careful observation.

“Initially, we thought he could return to the National Cricket Academy (NCA) or home in Mumbai, but he will be there in the UK for some time at least,” added the same source.

It was reported that Shaw might miss India’s upcoming domestic season, likely sidelining him for at least two months. This prognosis doubts his participation in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy and the Vijay Hazare Trophy.

Shaw’s journey in the international cricket scene has had its ups and downs. Following his last appearance for India in July 2021, he faced a period of exclusion from the team. Although he was included in the squad for the T20Is against New Zealand in February 2023, he didn’t have the chance to appear.

The same source further revealed that the 23-year-old batter will stay in the United Kingdom for a while. Last week, Cricbuzz reported that Prithvi Shaw will likely miss India’s upcoming domestic season as he is expected to be out of action for at least two months. The batter may miss Syed Mushtaq Ali’s Trophy and is doubtful for the Vijay Hazare Trophy.

Prithvi Shaw last represented India in July 2021 at the international level. Since then, he was out of the scheme of things before being picked in the squad for the home T20Is against New Zealand in February 2023. However, he didn’t get an opportunity to play and went through a lean patch in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023, following which he was again dropped from the team.
