Kohli Wicket Controversy: Indian Star Was ‘Not Out’ , Here Is What MCC Law Says

On day 2 of the second Test against India, Matthew Kuhnemann, the debutant for Australia, gave a dream start to his Test career when he dismissed the superstar batter of Team India, Virat Kohli. Kohli looked good with his bat and already had 44 runs before his dismissal.

On day 2, the left-arm spinner bowled tirelessly without receiving much return. He ultimately got Kohli in front of the stumps during the second session, giving the visitors a significant breakthrough.

However, there was some debate surrounding Kohli’s dismissal because it was unclear from the replays whether the ball had made contact with the bat or the pad first. The DRS suggested that the ball hit the bat first, but it was not clearly visible in the reviews. The third umpire decided to follow the on-field umpire’s decision and track the ball because he believed it had first struck the pad and Kohli was then eventually given out by the on-field umpire Nitin Menon.

The ball barely touched the stumps, as revealed by the replays and this raised the frustration of Kohli. According to the rules, if the ball is hitting the stumps, the batter must leave since the third umpire cannot reverse the on-field umpire’s decision.

Clause 36.2.2 of the MCC Laws of Cricket states that “if the ball makes contact with the striker’s person and bat simultaneously, this shall be considered as the ball having first touched the bat.”

However, according to the MCC rule of 36.2. 2, Virat Kohli was not out. This law says that if a ball hits the pad and the bat at the same time and the batter is caught in front of the wickets, he will remain there at the crease and it will not be termed as out.

Clause 36.2.2 of the MCC Laws of Cricket states that “if the ball makes contact with the striker’s person and bat simultaneously, this shall be considered as the ball having first touched the bat.”
