“Bowling 23 overs in a match…”Gavaskar’s Take: Critiquing India’s Decision To Rest Bumrah

The series was on the line as India was all set to take on England for the fourth test match of the series, which was played in Ranchi.

Ahead of the Ranchi test match, team management took a brave call from resting team India’s pace bowling sensation Jasprit Bumrah. After the first two days, Team India’s move to rest Bumrah was criticized by fans and cricket experts around the world as the hosts were reduced to 177/7 in the first innings of the Ranchi Test match.

However, Dhruv Jurel, along with the Indian spinners, paved the way for Team India’s comeback in the match, scripting a famous victory over the visitors to take a 3-1 lead in the five-match test series.

Team India has already won the test match, but former India opener Sunil Gavaskar has slammed team management’s move to rest Jasprit Bumrah in the fourth test match.

In his column for midday, Gavaskar wrote, “Don’t forget there was a nine-day break between the second and third Test matches, and then bowling 23 overs in the entire game is not tiring at all, so why was Bumrah rested? After the fourth test, there was going to be another eight-day break before the final test match, enough time for supremely fit athletes to recover and be ready to play for the country.”.

However, Gavaskar was pretty pleased with Aakashdeep’s performance in his debut test. The Bengal pacer picked up three wickets in his debut test match and impressed everyone with his performance.

Gavaskar further stated that “the fourth Test was also a crucial game, as if England had won that, the final Test would have been the decider. So, whether it was the NCA or Bumrah who took the call, it wasn’t in the Indian team’s immediate interest. That young Akash Deep, who bowled splendidly to offset Bumrah’s absence, once again showed that it doesn’t matter if the big names don’t play; there will always be young guns who will be only too happy, and as the skipper Rohit Sharma said, be hungry to play for India and to bear any hardship for the honor and privilege of playing for your country.”.
