The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has announced plans to up-gradation cricket stadiums across the country in preparation for the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023. The decision was made during the 19th Apex Council meeting held in Mumbai.
The upgradation process will be carried out in two phases, with the first phase focusing on the venues selected for the World Cup. Additionally, the BCCI made several other significant decisions, including formulating a policy for players’ participation in overseas T20 leagues and confirming India’s participation in the Asian Games.
“The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) held its 19th Apex Council meeting on Friday, July 7, 2023, at Mumbai,” said a press release from the governing body.
The BCCI’s primary focus is to enhance cricket infrastructure across the country. In the first phase, the board will prioritize the upgradation of the venues chosen for the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023. These upgrades are expected to be completed before the start of the tournament.
The second phase will involve the upgradation of the remaining stadiums, which will continue after the completion of the World Cup. The objective is to ensure that all stadiums meet international standards and provide a world-class experience for players and fans alike.
The BCCI intends to formulate a policy regarding player participation in overseas T20 leagues. This policy will apply not only to active players but also to retired cricketers. The objective is to balance allowing players to gain experience in various leagues worldwide while ensuring their availability and commitment to the Indian cricket team’s international fixtures.

The BCCI has confirmed that both the men’s and women’s cricket teams will participate in the Asian Games scheduled to be held in Hangzhou, China, in September 2023. However, due to the overlap of the Asian Games schedule with the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023, players not involved in the World Cup will be selected to represent India in the Asian Games. This decision ensures that the national team remains strong and competitive in both events.

The concept of the Impact Player, introduced in the previous season of the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy and the Indian Premier League, will continue with some modifications. Teams will now have to select their playing XI along with four substitute players before the toss.
Moreover, teams can utilize the Impact Player anytime during the match, providing more flexibility in strategic decision-making. Additionally, the upcoming Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy will allow two bouncers per over to maintain a balance between bat and ball.
