2023 ODI World Cup: Kane Williamson Will Play Against India Or Not? Stand-in Captain Tom Latham Gives An Update

India will face New Zealand in their fifth match of the ODI World Cup campaign. But before this match, the stand-in captain of the New Zealand cricket team, Tom Latham stated that Kane Williamson is still not completely healed from his thumb injury and will not be playing the match against India on Sunday.

Latham also mentioned that Tim Southee is an option for selection, as he has not participated in this edition of the tournament thus far. Kane Williamson played his first game of the tournament against Bangladesh in Chennai. However, he sustained a thumb injury during the closing stages of the match, which caused him to miss the clash against Afghanistan.

Meanwhile, Southee suffered a broken thumb in the ODI series against England last month and hasn’t been in action since that time.

Speaking before the match against India, Tom Latham said, “Obviously great to see you know that they’re there for another week and good luck to them next week’s going to be a great contest, and yeah Kane’s obviously, still nursing his thumb injury.”

He further stated, “It’s a day-by-day process with him as well. Fingers crossed he’ll be available for later on in the tournament. And in regards to Tim, he’s available for selection.”
