“You need to learn how to get…”: Sunil Gavaskar Slammed Star Indian Batters For Throwing Their Wickets

The cricketing world witnessed a spectacular display of batting prowess as Virat Kohli, India’s cricket maestro, led the team to a resounding seven-wicket victory over Bangladesh in the World Cup. Kohli’s unbeaten century was not only a remarkable individual achievement but also a testament to his consistency and determination.

Virat Kohli’s unbeaten century sealed India’s fourth consecutive win in the World Cup, demonstrating his extraordinary batting skills. He reached this milestone with a match-winning six against spinner Nasum Ahmed when he needed just three runs to complete his century. India was just two runs away from the target of 257, making Kohli’s century not only a personal achievement but also a game-changing moment.

With this century, Kohli drew closer to Sachin Tendulkar’s record for One Day International (ODI) centuries. The comparison to Tendulkar, one of cricket’s legends, adds a layer of significance to Kohli’s achievement. It’s a testament to Kohli’s exceptional consistency and his ability to perform under pressure.

While Kohli’s century took center stage, it’s essential to acknowledge the contributions of other team members. Captain Rohit Sharma played a crucial role, scoring 48 runs and providing a strong start to the Indian innings. Shubman Gill’s aggressive half-century, with 52 runs, added momentum to the chase.

However, not all was smooth sailing for the Indian team. Shreyas Iyer, batting at number four, was dismissed for just 19 runs. Sunil Gavaskar, the former India captain and renowned cricket analyst, expressed his dissatisfaction with the approach of both Gill and Iyer.

Gavaskar commented, “He (Shreyas Iyer) lost his patience. He was batting on 19, threw his wicket away. Shubman Gill (was batting on) fifty (52), threw his wicket away.” Gavaskar highlighted that Kohli’s batting approach is characterized by a determination not to throw his wicket away and making the opposition earn it.

Gavaskar stressed the importance of the younger batsmen, such as Shreyas Iyer and Shubman Gill, learning from Kohli’s approach. He pointed out that Shubman Gill is showing promise with his centuries but urged Shreyas Iyer to capitalize on his opportunities and not throw them away.

“Kohli never does that. Kohli will seldom ever throw his wicket away. He makes you earn his wicket. And that is exactly what you need. When he got to 70-80, realising that he has an opportunity to get to a hundred and why not? Hundreds don’t come everyday,” added the former India captain.

“You need to know how to get to a hundred and it’s important for Shreyas Iyer and Shubman Gill. Shubman Gillis at least getting hundreds, Shreyas Iyer is not getting hundreds. He is getting his opportunities to bat at number 4 on pitches as good as these and attacks as toothless as this and he is throwing away the opportunity,” Gavaskar emphasised.
