“I don’t want my son to become a cricketer…”: Yuvraj Singh’s Stance on His Son Pursuing Cricketing Career

Yuvraj Singh, the iconic Indian cricketer known for his incredible contributions to the sport, recently shared his thoughts on his son’s potential cricketing future. Renowned for his heroics, including the unforgettable six sixes in the 2007 T20 World Cup and earning the Man of the Tournament title in the 2011 World Cup, Yuvraj has left an indelible mark on Indian cricket. However, in a candid interview on TRS Clips, he expressed a desire for his son to explore paths beyond the cricket field.

Yuvraj Singh delved into the challenges faced by children of cricketers, highlighting the intense pressure exerted by media and public expectations. He expressed concerns about the constant comparisons drawn between these youngsters and their accomplished parents. The scrutiny and expectations could be overwhelming, making the journey difficult for these aspiring cricketers.

“I don’t want my son to become a cricketer. The pressure the kids have these days, especially the children of cricketers, I feel it’s a lot. It’s not easy on them as our public and media keep on comparing them (with their parents),” said Yuvraj on TRS Clips.

Despite Yuvraj’s cricketing legacy, he shared an interesting anecdote about introducing his son to golf. The former batter, an avid golf enthusiast, bought a plastic golf set for his son and taught him a few shots. However, it seems the allure of the cricket bat proved too strong.

Yuvraj narrated an incident where, despite being exposed to golf, his son’s natural inclination led him to pick up a cricket bat. Visiting his sister-in-law’s house, the young enthusiast chose the cricket bat over the golf set, running around with it in hand. Yuvraj acknowledged the innate preferences of children, emphasizing that some things are simply natural and cannot be influenced.

“I enjoy playing golf, so I bought a plastic golf set for my son. I taught him a few shots as he is very young right now and in his learning phase. So, he would hit a few balls and throw them from both his hands,” said Yuvraj.

While Yuvraj expressed reservations about his son pursuing a cricketing career, he also conveyed a supportive stance. Should his son harbour dreams of becoming a cricketer, Yuvraj asserted that he would stand behind him, providing unwavering support. However, he humorously added that he might also embody a bit of “Terminator 4” in the process.

“One day, he was at my sister-in-law’s house. Over there, he did not pick up the golf stick but took a cricket bat and started running here and there. So, there are
certain natural things, and you can’t really help them. If he wants to be a cricketer, I will definitely support him, but I will also be Terminator 4 (laughs),” he added.

Reflecting on Yuvraj’s cricketing journey, the statistics speak volumes about his impact on the field. With a career spanning 17 years, Yuvraj participated in 40 Tests, 304 ODIs, and 58 T20Is. Accumulating 1900 runs in Tests, 8701 runs in ODIs, and 1177 runs in T20Is, Yuvraj’s contributions earned him a place among India’s cricketing legends. His last international match was in 2017, and he officially announced his retirement in 2019.
