“There is no freedom in India, and you cannot go…”: Former Pakistani Cricketer Abdul Razzaq

The ongoing ICC World Cup 2023 has witnessed thrilling cricket battles. Still, off the field, concerns about the security measures for the Pakistan cricket team have been raised by former cricketer Abdul Razzaq. The tight surveillance and restrictions imposed on the players, aimed at ensuring their safety in India, have left them with limited freedom and have become a topic of discussion in the cricketing world.

Abdul Razzaq, in a recent statement to local news outlets, shed light on the challenges faced by the Pakistani players due to the stringent security measures. The historical tensions and diplomatic issues between India and Pakistan have led to the implementation of extensive security protocols by the BCCI. While safety is a top priority, these measures have resulted in the players having minimal opportunities to go outside and enjoy themselves during the tournament.

Razzaq emphasized the impact of these restrictions on the players’ performance. The lack of freedom, according to him, hinders their ability to relax and mentally prepare for intense cricket matches. He argued that players need the liberty to unwind, explore, and engage in activities beyond the confines of their hotel rooms to maintain a healthy mindset for peak performance.

“There is no freedom in India, and you cannot go out of hotels and enjoy yourself. The security in India is too tight, and you are always stuck in hotels. A player needs freedom, and he cannot perform when there are so many restrictions on him,” said Razzaq, as quoted by a user on X (formerly known as Twitter).

The concerns raised by Razzaq highlight the delicate balance between ensuring the safety of players and allowing them the freedom required for optimal performance. Cricket, as a sport, demands not just physical prowess but also mental agility. The mental well-being of players is often linked to their performance on the field.
