England registered a 267-run win against New Zealand in the first Test played at Mount Maunganui on Sunday. England took a 1-0 lead in the two-match series with this victory. On Saturday, James Anderson and Stuart Broad became the highest wicket-takers in Test history, surpassing Australian greats Shane Warne and Glenn McGrath.
England has won a Test on New Zealand soil for the first time in almost 15 years. Before this, in 2008, the English team won at McLean Park in Napier in March under the leadership of Michael Vaughan. In that test match, Ryan Sidebottom took seven wickets in the first innings for the English team.
In the first test match against New Zealand, England had declared the first innings at 325 for nine wickets while batting first. After this, New Zealand’s first innings were concluded over 306 runs. England scored 374 runs in the second innings, and New Zealand was all out for 126 runs. Darryl Mitchell scored the highest 57 runs. Anderson and Broad took 4-4 wickets.
With this, England won 10 of their most recent 11 Test matches. England has moved to third in the ICC Men’s Test team rankings, behind Australia and India. The series in New Zealand, which is not part of the ongoing World Test Championship, will give England a lot of confidence ahead of the second match and the Ashes series against Australia at home later this year.
England will look to win the series against New Zealand in the second Test starting on February 25 in Wellington.
