ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023 In India Break All-Time Tournament Attendance Record

The recently concluded ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023 has not only etched its place in cricketing history but has also left an indelible mark on the hearts of 1.25 million enthusiastic spectators. With Australia clinching its sixth title in a thrilling final against India, the tournament reached new heights of excitement and engagement.

The International Cricket Council (ICC) reported a staggering 1,250,307 spectators during the six-and-a-half-week cricket extravaganza. Even before the showdown, the tournament had already surpassed the one million spectator mark, showcasing the immense popularity and allure of the World Cup.

The attendance figures from India exceeded previous records set by the 2015 World Cup in Australia and New Zealand, which drew 1,016,420 spectators, and the 2019 edition in England and Wales, which boasted 752,000 fans.

The 10-team tournament in India featured a round-robin format, with each team playing against the others to secure a spot in the semi-finals. A total of 48 matches were played, resulting in an impressive average attendance of approximately 26,000 per match.

The 13th edition of the World Cup, dating back to its inception in 1975, has proven to be a historic and monumental event. Cricket enthusiasts from around the globe witnessed exceptional performances, nail-biting encounters, and moments of sheer brilliance.

Chris Tetley, the ICC Head of Events, expressed his satisfaction with the tournament’s outcome. He labelled the one-day international (ODI) format as a “great success” and highlighted the enduring appeal of cricket. Tetley commended the spectators for their overwhelming response, turning the World Cup into a global celebration of the sport.

Apart from the record-breaking attendance, the tournament also made significant strides in breaking broadcast and digital viewership records. Cricket, in its ODI format, showcased its ability to captivate audiences worldwide, proving to be not just a sport but a unifying force.
