The squad of team India for the ODI World Cup was announced yesterday and the former Indian leg-spinner Piyush Chawla has given his verdict on this selection. He has shown his support behind players such as Ishan Kishan and KL Rahul, favoring them over Shreyas Iyer in India’s 15-member squad, which was recently announced by BCCI.
After the squad’s announcement, cricket fans and experts shared their opinions on the team composition. Piyush Chawla also joined in and expressed his views on the lineup. He raised questions about the inclusion of Shreyas Iyer in the squad while showing his support for Ishan Kishan and KL Rahul as choices for the middle-order positions.
“We are talking about both of them, why not Shreyas Iyer? Shreyas Iyer’s place should also be questioned. Ishan (Kishan) cannot remain in the reserves now because of the way he has batted in the top order. People had a question about how he would bat in the middle order and the way he batted in the middle order after coming into bat in a tough situation, he is going through good form and he solves the problem of the absence of a left-hander in the middle order, which we often talk about,” Piyush said on Star Sports.
He further stated,”So, he is straightaway a walk-in for me. If we talk about KL Rahul, his track record is so good and he has done so well over the years.”
Ishan’s recent batting performances have been outstanding, with scores of 82, 77, 55, and 52 in his last four ODIs. On the other hand, Shreyas returned to the team after recovering from a back injury but couldn’t make a significant impact with the bat against Pakistan. Piyush Chawla suggested that the team management should support Ishan’s inclusion in the XI.
“You have asked who should be the wicketkeeper. When India will play in Chennai and Lucknow, the No. 1 wicket keeper will be a specialist wicketkeeper and Ishan Kishan is a specialist wicketkeeper,” highlighted Piyush.
