On August 21, Monday, the BCCI unveiled the squad for the Asia Cup 2023. Captain Rohit Sharma, who was present at the meeting with the selectors will lead the team. Under the guidance of Ajit Agarkar – the New Chief Selector, the selection committee designated a 17-member lineup that will compete in the Asia Cup. The tournament is scheduled to take place in Sri Lanka and Pakistan starting from August 30.
Team India will be led by Rohit Sharma with Hardik Pandya as the vice-captain of the team. Tilak Varma who has impressed everyone with his batting in the recently concluded West Indies tour has got a chance. Apart from him, the wicket-keeper batter KL Rahul who has been struggling with his thigh injury since IPL 2023 is now making a comeback for the team. Shreyas Iyer also returns to the side for the Asia Cup tournament. Prasidh Krishna who has done exceptional in the first two matches against Ireland, has been called for Asia Cup.
In the squad, Sanju Samson has also been added as the backup wicket-keeper.
The Asia Cup will be a practice for all the top Asian teams for the ODI World Cup set to happen in India. Earlier, there had been so much debate and discussion among the team regarding the hosting of the Asia Cup. BCCI did not want to send the team.
India will play its first match against Pakistan Cricket Team at Pallekele on September 2. After that the Rohit Sharma and company will have an interesting clash with the Nepal on September 4.
