The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has taken a significant step towards nurturing young cricket talent by organizing a three-week camp at the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Bengaluru. The camp aims to develop promising cricketers and prepare them for the game’s elite level. Among the notable youngsters summoned for the camp is Arjun Tendulkar, the son of legendary Indian cricketer Sachin Tendulkar. This move by the BCCI reflects their commitment to identifying and honing the skills of young players who have shown exceptional performances at the domestic level and in tournaments like the Indian Premier League (IPL).
The BCCI, in collaboration with the NCA, intends to upgrade the skills of talented youngsters and foster the growth of multi-skilled players across various formats. The selection of participants for the camp has been carefully carried out by the senior national selection committee, headed by former Indian opener Shiv Sunder Das on an interim basis. The committee has focused on choosing individuals who have excelled with the bat and ball in recent domestic leagues or the IPL.
According to a senior BCCI source, the camp is preparing for the upcoming Emerging Asia Cup (U-23) and aims to identify potential young players. The BCCI is keen on nurturing all-rounders who can contribute to multiple aspects of the game. While only some summoned to the camp are pure all-rounders, the goal is to tap into their potential and enhance their skills to facilitate their transition to the next level.
Arjun Tendulkar’s inclusion in the camp has raised eyebrows, considering his modest performances in recent times. However, the BCCI source highlighted that Arjun brings variety to the table as a left-arm pacer, and his century in the Ranji Trophy while making his debut for Goa showcases his potential. Other notable youngsters, including Chetan Sakariya, a left-arm pacer, and batter from Saurashtra, Abhishek Sharma, a talented all-rounder from Sunrisers Hyderabad, and Harsit Rana from Delhi, have also been summoned for the camp. Harsit Rana, previously selected as a net bowler for the senior Indian team, continues to impress the selectors with his skills.
Arjun Tendulkar, who recently appeared for the Mumbai Indians in the IPL, has shown promise as a left-arm pacer. Despite limited appearances in domestic cricket, he has claimed 12 wickets from seven first-class matches. The BCCI selection committee believes that, at 23 years of age, Arjun has the potential and time to develop further.
