Big Controversy Erupts As 2023 Asia Cup’s Jerseys Missing Out Pakistan’s Name, PCB Criticized ACC

The Asia Cup 2023, a highly anticipated cricketing event, is at the center of a brewing controversy. The host nation, Pakistan, was conspicuously absent from the jerseys of the participating teams. While seemingly trivial, this omission has triggered a wave of discussions among cricket enthusiasts, former players, and fans. In this article, we delve into the heart of this controversy, exploring the reasons behind the absence of Pakistan’s name and the reactions it has garnered.

The Asia Cup 2023 commenced with Pakistan facing Nepal in Multan on August 30. Pakistan secured a resounding victory over their opponents, setting the stage for an exciting tournament. However, keen-eyed spectators quickly noticed an unusual detail – the absence of Pakistan’s name on the team jerseys. Instead, the jerseys featured the Asia Cup logo on the right side, leaving the host nation’s identity in question.

As the images of jerseys from India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, and Bangladesh began to circulate, cricket fans expressed their dismay. This omission was particularly puzzling given the tournament’s host. In the previous edition of the Asia Cup, even though the tournament took place in the UAE, the jerseys correctly displayed the name of the host nation. This historical precedent only deepened the confusion surrounding the current situation.

Former Pakistan cricketers, including Rashid Latif and Mohsin Khan, voiced their discontent, directing their ire towards the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) and the Asia Cricket Council (ACC). Rashid Latif minced no words, labeling the situation as “unacceptable.” He emphasized that the ACC, as the custodian of the Asia Cup, needed to explain this oversight.
“This is unacceptable, and it is the Asian Cricket Council that must explain this oversight since the Asia Cup is their property,” he said.

The PCB tried to downplay the situation by revealing that the ACC had decided not to include the host country’s name with the Asia Cup logo in future events. However, this explanation failed to satisfy former players and fans. Many questioned the rationale behind such a decision, especially since Pakistan was hosting a multi-team event after a gap of 15 years.

Mohsin Khan, the former Test batsman, raised a pertinent question. He pointed out that the ACC had applied different standards by featuring the host country’s name on logos for other events, such as the Asian Emerging Nations Cup and the Asian under-16 event held in Malaysia. This inconsistency left many scratching their heads.

“Makes no sense at all. Then why has the ACC given the host country’s name on the logos for their Asian Emerging Nations Cup or their Asian under-16 event held in July in Malaysia,” former Test batsman Mohsin Khan questioned.

Speculations and theories began to surface regarding the true reasons behind this omission. One unnamed former player hinted at the involvement of Jay Shah, the President of the ACC and the secretary of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). He suggested that the delicate diplomatic relations between India and Pakistan might have influenced the decision. The assumption was that it might have been deemed embarrassing for the Indian team to wear kits bearing Pakistan’s name on the official Asia Cup logo.

“Given the current scenario between the two countries, perhaps the BCCI official felt it would be embarrassing for the Indian team players to wear kits with the name of Pakistan on the official Asia Cup logo,” he was quoted as saying by news agency PTI.

Rashid Latif echoed these concerns, emphasizing that the situation demanded clarification. As the controversy continues to brew, cricket enthusiasts and fans eagerly await an official statement from the ACC, shedding light on this unexpected turn of events.
