Morne Morkel Stepped Down As Pakistan’s Bowling Coach After Their Exit From  2023 ODI World Cup,  PCB Gives A Statement

Former South African pacer Morne Morkel has stepped down from the role of South Africa’s bowling coach after the underwhelming performance of the team in the ongoing 2023 ODI World Cup. Morkel is the first member of the coaching staff to depart after Pakistan’s disappointing performance in the ODI World Cup.

Morne Morkel had joined on a six-month contract in June, with his initial assignment being two Tests in Sri Lanka. During his tenure, he played a role in Pakistan’s ODI series victory against Afghanistan, as well as their participation in the Asia Cup and then the mega tournament in India.

Pakistan’s pace department faced a major setback with Naseem Shah’s exit before the start of the tournament which weakened the bowling attack. Although Shaheen Afridi managed to secure 18 wickets he also faced challenges at the beginning of the tournament. Despite these hurdles, Pakistan’s pacers collectively claimed 50 wickets in the event.

“Pakistan Cricket Board will announce his replacement in due course. Pakistan’s next assignment is a three-match Test series against Australia scheduled to take place from December 14, 2023, to January 7, 2024, in Australia,” the PCB said in a statement on Monday.

Pakistan fell short of qualifying for the semifinals and finished the fifth position. Fans and media in Pakistan were highly disappointed after their exit from the tournament and they even demanded the removal of Babar Azam from the captaincy.
