“We’ll have to discuss the positions where…”: Ashish Nehra Names Players Who Can Put Rinku Singh’s T20 World Cup 2024 Spot In Danger

Young Indian cricketer Rinku Singh’s recent exploits in the 5-match T20I series against Australia have not gone unnoticed. The 26-year-old left a mark with his finishing abilities, amassing 105 runs in five matches at an impressive average of 52.50 and a striking strike rate of 175. Singh’s impact was particularly evident in the second T20I at Thiruvananthapuram, where his unbeaten 31 off nine balls played a pivotal role in India’s 44-run victory. The southpaw showcased his prowess as a game-changer, elevating his standing in the squad.

Ashish Nehra, now a cricket commentator, believes that Rinku Singh is undeniably a contender for India’s T20 World Cup 2024 squad. Nehra acknowledges Singh’s potential but emphasizes the fierce competition that lies ahead.

While Singh’s performances have caught the eye, Nehra points out that the battle for a spot in the T20 World Cup squad is far from easy. Singh faces a daunting challenge with as many as five players, including KL Rahul, Suryakumar Yadav, and Shreyas Iyer, vying for similar roles.

Nehra points out the array of challengers for Singh’s coveted spot, mentioning Jitesh Sharma Tilak Varma and discussing the roles of Shreyas Iyer, Suryakumar Yadav, and Hardik Pandya. The competition intensifies as the squad selection discussions loom.

Nehra said, “There is no doubt that Rinku Singh is a contender for inclusion in India’s T20 World Cup squad. But the World Cup is still far away, and the spot he’s fighting for has many challengers.”

“You can look at Jitesh Sharma (wicketkeeper-batter) and Tilak Varma. We’ll have to discuss the positions where Shreyas Iyer, Suryakumar Yadav and Hardik Pandya will play,” the cricketer-turned-commentator said.

With a trip to South Africa and the IPL 2024 on the horizon, Singh’s journey to securing a spot in the T20 World Cup squad is far from over. Nehra highlights the importance of these upcoming events in shaping the final squad composition.

Nehra underscores that while Singh has opened everyone’s eyes with his performances, time is still on the side of the selectors. The upcoming tours and the IPL will provide a clearer picture of Singh’s consistency and adaptability.

“We must see how many spots are available in the 15-member squad. But one thing is sure: he (Rinku) has opened everyone’s eyes and put everyone under pressure. But there’s still a lot of time to go. The trip to South Africa is coming up, followed by the IPL,” Nehra concluded.
