“There is no such offer to become Indian chief selector”: Virender Sehwag

Former India opener Virender Sehwag has dismissed recent speculations suggesting that the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) approached him for the chief selector position. With the BCCI still seeking a new head of the selection committee following the departure of Chetan Sharma, Sehwag clarified that he had not been contacted regarding the role.

As the search for the chief selector continues, the BCCI has invited applications for a position on the men’s selection committee, with the chosen candidate likely to assume the chief selector’s responsibilities.

Since Chetan Sharma departed from the chief selector’s role in February after a sting operation, the BCCI has been without a permanent head of the selection committee. In the interim, former India player Shiv Sunder Das has been fulfilling the role of the interim chief selector, accompanied by S Sharath (South), Subroto Banerjee (Central), and Salil Ankola (West) as fellow panel members.

The BCCI has now released an advertisement on its website, inviting applications for a men’s selection committee member, with the successful candidate potentially being appointed as the new chief selector.

When questioned by The Times of India, Virender Sehwag denied any offer or approach for the chief selector’s post. The former India cricketer stated that the BCCI had not contacted him regarding the position. The clarification from Sehwag puts to rest the recent rumours surrounding his potential involvement in the selection committee.

“No,” Sehwag replied when TOI asked him about any such offer.

To qualify for the position, the BCCI has outlined certain eligibility criteria for interested candidates. The prospective candidate must have played at least seven Tests, participated in 30 first-class matches, or been involved in 10 ODIs and 20 first-class matches.

Furthermore, the applicant must have retired from the game at least five years before the application date. The last day to apply for the position is June 30, and the chosen candidate will be entrusted with the responsibility of planning and developing a strong bench strength and appointing captains for the team in each format.
