Former India cricketer Suresh Raina suggests Ruturaj Gaikwad as a promising candidate to succeed MS Dhoni as the captain of the Chennai Super Kings once Dhoni retires from the IPL. Raina anticipates that CSK would prefer to identify Dhoni’s successor by the conclusion of the upcoming IPL 2024 season.
With Dhoni being one of the two most successful captains in IPL history, alongside former Mumbai Indians skipper Rohit Sharma, CSK is already considering their future leadership options. Since CSK’s triumph in IPL 2023, during which Dhoni hinted subtly that the next season might mark his final one, fans have been speculating about who could potentially lead the team next.
During an IPL show on Jio Cinema, Raina emphasized the significance of IPL 2024 for CSK. He elaborated on how both CSK and Dhoni would be strategizing with a potential candidate for captaincy in mind.
“The biggest question is who’ll be their next captain? Even if Dhoni stepped away as captain, he’ll be in the dugout whether it’s as a mental toughness coach or just for his presence. But the question is, who is he going to nurture?” Raina said.
Raina said that Gaikwad seems to be the perfect candidate to lead the team after MS Dhoni.
“Ruturaj Gaikwad is a good option. This year is a very important year for CSK, more than for MS Dhoni. Because we’ll see who he is going to select as his deputy,” Raina added.
