Bhuvneshwar Kumar was all set to lead India at the Hong Kong Sixes, but an unexpected international comeback has changed everything. The pacer’s return to national duty has forced a change in India’s plans, with Krunal Pandya taking over the captaincy and Kulwant Khejroliya replacing Bhuvneshwar in the squad.
Bhuvneshwar had been named captain of a seven-member team featuring several experienced IPL players. However, his selection for the New Zealand tour means he will be unavailable for the Hong Kong Sixes, scheduled from October 30 to November 1.
He has also been recalled for India’s deciding T20I against West Indies while Arshdeep Singh recovers from a shoulder injury. Bhuvneshwar will therefore remain with the national team before heading to New Zealand.
Krunal Pandya Takes Charge of India
Krunal Pandya now has the responsibility of leading India’s campaign. The all-rounder already has captaincy experience, having led Baroda in domestic cricket and Lucknow Super Giants in the IPL.
That makes him an experienced option to take charge following Bhuvneshwar’s withdrawal. His ability to contribute with both bat and ball also gives India flexibility in a format where each player has a significant role.
Khejroliya’s inclusion gives the squad a left-arm pace option alongside T. Natarajan. While Khejroliya replaces Bhuvneshwar as a player, the leadership responsibility passes to Krunal.
India’s Updated Hong Kong Sixes Squad
- Krunal Pandya (captain)
- Shashank Singh
- Rahul Tewatia
- Nitish Rana
- Rahul Tripathi
- T. Natarajan
- Kulwant Khejroliya
India have retained considerable batting experience despite losing their original captain. Shashank and Tewatia bring finishing ability, while Rana and Tripathi provide options higher in the order.
The selection reflects a serious effort to build a competitive side. Several members have experience handling pressure in the IPL, which could prove valuable in a tournament where a few deliveries can decide a match.
Six Players, Six Overs and a Tough Title Challenge
The Hong Kong Sixes features six players per side and six overs per innings, with India selecting seven players in their squad.
The short format leaves little time to recover from mistakes. Quick scoring, accurate bowling and sharp fielding become crucial from the start.
Pakistan enter the tournament as defending champions and six-time winners. India’s experienced squad gives Krunal the resources to mount a strong challenge, with the aim of converting that quality into a title-winning campaign.
