Former Indian cricketer Sunil Gavaskar has raised questions about Rohit Sharma’s captaincy following India’s disappointing performances in important matches since his takeover. Gavaskar expressed his dissatisfaction with Rohit’s leadership and called for increased accountability among Team India’s coaching staff, including Rahul Dravid, Vikram Rathour, and Paras Mhambrey. Speaking at The Indian Express Idea Exchange, Gavaskar emphasized the need for better results in overseas matches and sought clarification regarding the decisions made during India’s World Test Championship final loss to Australia.
Gavaskar acknowledged Rohit Sharma’s experience and success in domestic cricket, especially his five Indian Premier League (IPL) titles. However, he pointed out that winning in home conditions is different from achieving victory in challenging overseas matches, where India has struggled under Rohit’s captaincy. Gavaskar expressed disappointment over India’s failure to reach the finals of the ICC T20 World Cup as an example of the team’s recent underwhelming performance in crucial contests.
In light of India’s recent setbacks, Gavaskar called for enhanced accountability among the coaching staff, particularly Rahul Dravid, who serves as the head coach, Vikram Rathour, the batting coach, and Paras Mhambrey, the bowling coach. Gavaskar urged the selection committee to question the decision-making process and demand explanations for critical choices made during matches.
Gavaskar specifically highlighted India’s World Test Championship final loss to Australia and questioned the decision to field first. He suggested that the selection committee should inquire about the reasoning behind this choice, considering the conditions and the opposition’s strengths. Furthermore, Gavaskar expressed his concern regarding the failure to exploit Travis Head’s vulnerability against short-pitched deliveries, questioning why the Indian team did not take advantage of this weakness.

“The selection committee should be asking them questions, ‘Why did you field first?’ The next question should be about Travis Head’s weakness against short ball and why it was not exploited?”
