Babar Azam is really struggling with his batting lately, and former Pakistan captain Zaheer Abbas thinks he should turn to the experienced players for help. Zaheer pointed out that Babar might have a bit of an ego or could just be too shy to ask for advice. It’s been a tough time for Babar—since smashing 151 runs against Nepal in August 2023, he hasn’t hit a century for Pakistan and hasn’t done well in the Pakistan Super League either. Leading Peshawar Zalmi, he scored 0 and 1 in his first two matches this season.
Zaheer shared his thoughts with Cricket Pakistan, saying, “I feel like either Babar has an ego issue or he’s just too shy to reach out to his seniors for help.” He also reminisced about when former Indian captain Mohammad Azharuddin sought his advice during a tough time on a tour to Pakistan back in 1989-90, which helped Azhar get back on track after he changed his batting grip.
Commenting on Babar’s technique, Zaheer observed that Babar seems to be rushing his shots lately, which makes it clear he isn’t settling well at the crease. Another former captain, Rashid Latif, weighed in by saying that Babar is struggling because there isn’t a good mentor or batting coach around to guide him. When things get tough, you need a way out, but Babar hasn’t found his yet. He needs to figure this out on his own, Latif said.
