Cheteshwar Pujara, the veteran Indian batsman, has been left out of the Test squad for the upcoming West Indies tour, signaling a potential shift in India’s long-term strategy. The decision has raised speculation about Pujara’s future in the national team, with many suggesting that the Indian management might be exploring alternative options.
Aakash Chopra, former Indian opener and cricket commentator, weighed in on the matter, highlighting the possibility of India looking beyond Pujara and focusing on younger talents.
As Team India prepares for the two-Test series against the West Indies, excluding Cheteshwar Pujara from the 16-member squad has caught the attention of fans and experts alike. Pujara, known for his solid technique and ability to grind out runs, has been a mainstay in India’s Test lineup for several years. However, recent developments suggest that the team management is contemplating a shift in their approach.
In a video on his YouTube channel, Aakash Chopra acknowledged that Pujara’s omission doesn’t necessarily mean the end of his international career. He cited the example of Ajinkya Rahane, who was also dropped at one point but eventually made a strong comeback. Chopra highlighted Pujara’s exceptional performances in county cricket, which was crucial in earning him a place back in the team.
“Cheteshwar Pujara is not there. You should always say never because when Ajinkya Rahane has come back like that, Cheteshwar Pujara was also dropped in between, and his performance was amazing in county cricket, due to which he was given a place again in the team.” Aakash Chopra said.
Chopra further speculated that with the new World Test Championship (WTC) cycle beginning, the Indian team management might consider changing their batting lineup. Pujara, now in his early thirties, is not getting any younger, prompting the team to explore different options and invest in younger talents who could serve the team’s long-term interests.

“He did well too (in Tests), but now it seems, the next WTC cycle is starting, he is not getting younger by the day, and maybe the Indian team has started to look in a different direction.” the former Indian opener added.
Despite being dropped from the Test squad, Pujara has been included in the West Zone squad for the upcoming Duleep Trophy. This indicates that the selectors have not completely ruled out his return to the national team. Pujara has reportedly been allowed to regain his place by performing well in first-class cricket.
