Sam Billings, who plays as a wicketkeeper and batter for England, recently shared his thoughts on the best T20 cricket league out there. Currently, he’s suiting up for the Lahore Qalandars in the Pakistan Super League, but when asked about the top franchise league, Billings didn’t hesitate to point to the Indian Premier League (IPL) as the leader of the pack. He believes it far surpasses any other T20 league out there.
It’s interesting to note that Billings didn’t find a spot in the IPL 2025 auction; his last appearance in the league was back in 2022 when he played for the Kolkata Knight Riders. During this press conference, he mentioned that the PSL is rivaling England’s The Hundred and Australia’s Big Bash League for the title of the next best league.
In his own words, he said, You want me to say something silly, don’t you? The cool thing about cricket is that no matter where you play around the world, you always have to adapt to different conditions. Whether you’re in India, Pakistan, Australia, or England, you have to shift your game accordingly.
Billings feels there’s no way to really rank these competitions directly. He thinks it’s pretty clear that the IPL stands out as the top tournament, with other leagues trailing behind. “In England, we’re working hard to develop our league, like the PSL, to possibly claim the spot as the second-best,” he noted, acknowledging the Big Bash is aiming for that position as well.
Still, he pointed out that comparing leagues is tough since each one presents unique challenges. Billings expressed gratitude for the opportunity to travel the world and play cricket, saying, “I wouldn’t trade this job for anything.” He enjoys bringing joy to fans wherever he goes.
Sam has had a notable career in the IPL, kicking things off in 2016 with the Delhi Capitals. After that, he played for Chennai Super Kings in 2018 and 2019, and then he moved to play for KKR in 2022. Since 2023, he has been representing Lahore Qalandars in the PSL. It’s been quite a journey for him in the T20 circuit.
