IPL 2024: Kolkata Knight Riders Set To Release Star All-Rounder And 2 Pacers

The IPL buzz is already in the air, and one name that has been a constant topic of discussion is Andre Russell. The explosive all-rounder has been a vital part of Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in the past seasons, but questions arose about his future with the team.

In the last few seasons, Andre Russell has not quite lived up to the towering expectations set by his earlier performances. Since his impressive 510-run stint in IPL 2019, Russell’s contributions have dwindled, raising concerns among fans and pundits alike. With age catching up and his recent performances not reflecting the same explosive form, there was widespread anticipation that Kolkata Knight Riders might release Andre Russell ahead of the IPL 2024 auction.

Contrary to expectations, recent reports suggest that Kolkata Knight Riders have opted to retain Andre Russell for at least one more season. Despite his recent struggles, the two-time IPL champions seem to value Russell’s experience and potential match-winning abilities.

Reports from Cricbuzz indicate that Kolkata Knight Riders are planning to release three pacers from their squad as part of their IPL 2024 strategy. This decision suggests a reshaping of the team dynamics and a focus on building a balanced squad for the upcoming season.

Among the three pacers set to be released, one notable name is India’s Shardul Thakur. Acquired at a price of Rs 10 crore before the IPL 2023 auction, Thakur’s performance in his maiden season with KKR saw ups and downs, with 7 wickets in 11 games.

The other two pacers on the release list are Lockie Ferguson and Tim Southee. Ferguson, traded from Gujarat Titans, played only 3 games in the last season, claiming a solitary wicket with an economy rate over 12. Southee, who featured in just a couple of games, conceded more than 13 runs per over.

In addition to player changes, Kolkata Knight Riders have made significant alterations to their backroom staff. One notable addition is the return of their former captain, Gautam Gambhir, who will assume the role of mentor for the upcoming season.
