Senior India bowler Umesh Yadav was defrauded by his friend-turned-manager of a stunning INR 44 lakh under the guise of buying land in the cricketer’s name in Nagpur, Maharashtra. An accusation of cheating has been made against Shailesh Thakre, according to a police officer, after Umesh filed a report.
Notably, Shailesh Thakre (37), who also happens to be Umesh Yadav’s buddy, resides in Koradi, Maharashtra, not far from Nagpur, according to sources. In July 2014, after learning that Thakre was unemployed, Yadav recruited him as his manager.
According to the police source, Shailesh Thakre quickly gained Umesh Yadav’s trust. The person said that Thakre was responsible for handling the cricketer’s money, including his bank account, income taxes, and other matters.
The First Information Report (FIR) reported by NDTV read, “Thakre gained the trust of Yadav over time. He started handling all the financial affairs of Umesh Yadav. He used to handle Yadav’s bank account, income tax, and other financial tasks.”
The insider further stated that Umesh Yadav had spoken with Shailesh Thakre about his plans to purchase a block of land in Nagpur.
The police officer added, “Thakre located a plot in a barren area. He told Yadav he would get it for Rs 44 lakh. Yadav deposited Rs 44 lakh in Thakre’s bank account. However, Thakre purchased the plot in his name.”
Umesh urged Thakre to transfer ownership of the plot into his name once he learned about the deception, and when the accused denied doing so, the speedster asked him to refund his money.
However, when Thakre did not return the money either, Umesh immediately reported the incident to Koradi police, who opened an investigation under sections 420 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and 406 of the Indian Penal Code (Punishment for Criminal Breach of Trust), according to the official.
