ICC WT20 2022: IRE vs WI Match Report- Ireland Denies Qualification Of 2-Time Champion West Indies

Match No.11 of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2022 was played between Ireland and West Indies on 21 October, Friday in Hobart. West Indies scored only 146 runs losing 5 wickets in the first innings. Gareth Delany gave 16 runs for 3 wickets for Ireland.

West won the toss and elected to bat first. Their batting started abruptly, losing openers in the powerplay. But the middle order came back strongly and put up a strong partnership of 45 runs for the third wicket. At one point West Indies was looking to put up a strong rather target of 160+. But quality death bowling from Ireland restricted West Indies to a below-par score. Brandon King played brilliant innings of 62 runs in 48 balls not out. Along with him, Odean Smith helped finish the innings with 19 runs. Johnson Charles scored 24 runs in 18 balls.
Ireland put up a tremendous bowling effort in the do-or-die game under pressure. Despite not taking many wickets from the opposition. They prevented any attack from the batters. Spinner Gareth Delany took 3 wickets only giving 16 runs in his spell. Simi Singh and Barry McCarthy took 1 wicket each.

West Indies were under so much heat that they imploded in the second innings. Ireland batters never gave a chance to the bowling side. Openers Andrew Balbirnie and Paul Stirling smashed West Indian bowlers left, right, and center. They put up a match-winning partnership of 73 runs only in 45 balls. Captain Balbirnie got dismissed scoring 37 runs in 23 balls. Paul Stirling and Lorcan Tucker took Ireland home and through to the Super 12 Round. Stirling smashed 66 runs in 48 balls and Tucker scored 45 runs in 35 balls.
West Indies bowling missed the trick by not introducing Jason Holder in the powerplay. Only spinner Akeal Hosein was able to one wicket of the Irish skipper. But it was too late for them.

Ireland became the first team to qualify for the Super 12 Round from Group B.
