History Created, Men’s T20I Match Gets First Woman On-field Umpire Between 2 Test Playing Nations

In the second match of the three-match T20I series, New Zealand beat Sri Lanka by nine wickets. The match played at University Oval, Dunedin also created history for the as it witnessed the first woman umpire in any Men’s T20 International match.

Kim Cotton who hails from New Zealand has made history by becoming the first woman to officiate as an on-field umpire in a men’s T20I matches between two full-time Test-playing nations. She achieved this milestone during the second T20I match between New Zealand and Sri Lanka on April 5.

Cotton shared the responsibility of on-field umpiring in the second T20I between New Zealand and Sri Lanka with her fellow countryman Wayne Knights. This was not the first time that Cotton had officiated in a men’s cricket game. Back in 2020, she had previously served as the third umpire in a tied match between India and New Zealand which was played in Hamilton.

During the 2020 finale of the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup, she became the first-ever woman to take charge of any ICC Major event. The match was played between India and Australia at Melbourne Cricket Ground.

Talking about the second T20I between New Zealand and Sri Lanka, the hosts bundled out Sri Lanka on 141 runs in all 19 overs. Chasing the target of 142 runs, New Zealand achieved the target in just 14.4 overs, thanks to the superb hitting of Tim Seifert who scored 73 runs in just 43 balls with the help of three fours and 6 sixes.
