“He was varying his pace and the West Indies batters did not…” Pragyan Ojha Praises Ravichandran Ashwin’s Stellar Performance

Former India spinner Pragyan Ojha expressed his admiration for Ravichandran Ashwin following his exceptional performance on the first day of the first Test against the West Indies. Ashwin claimed his 33rd five-wicket haul in Test cricket, finishing with impressive figures of 5 for 60, as India bowled out the hosts for a mere 150 in their first innings. Ojha lauded Ashwin’s skill and subtlety, noting that the West Indies batsmen struggled to handle his variations.

Ojha highlighted Ashwin’s previous success against the West Indies, stating that the veteran spinner has consistently troubled their batsmen. With four centuries against them and a successful debut performance, Ashwin has proven a vital asset for the Indian team. Ojha praised Ashwin’s ability to set up batsmen effectively, varying his pace and leaving the West Indies batters without answers. According to Ojha, Ashwin’s ability to wrap up the innings showcased his importance to the Indian team.

“He has got four hundred against them. He made his debut against them, picking wickets, and has done wonderfully well. The way he set up the batters was brilliant. He was varying his pace, and the West Indies batters did not have answers to the questions that Ashwin threw to them. The way he wrapped up the innings shows how important he is for the Indian team,” Ojha said on Jio Cinema.

With this performance, Ashwin added to his formidable record against the West Indies in Test cricket, having taken 65 wickets in 12 matches at an impressive average of 21.09. Furthermore, he became only the third Indian bowler, after Anil Kumble and Harbhajan Singh, to reach the 700-wicket milestone in international cricket.

Ojha also emphasized that Ashwin is a player who consistently delivers when the team needs him. Comparing him to champion players, Ojha highlighted Ashwin’s ability to overcome challenges and perform at a high level. Despite being left out of the playing XI for the World Test Championship final against New Zealand, Ashwin has shown his resilience and determination by making a strong impact in the current Test series against the West Indies.

“If you see all the champion players, they cross that hurdle and make sure that they always deliver when the team needs them. Ashwin has always been special with the ball, and he continues to do that,” Ojha said.
