The defending champions, the Chennai Super Kings, have appointed a new skipper ahead of the upcoming IPL season, which is set to start tomorrow. CSK’s opening batsman, Ruturaj Gaikwad, has been officially named as the new skipper of CSK heading into this year’s IPL.
Ms. Dhoni, who is regarded as one of the most prominent faces and captains of the IPL, relinquished his captaincy, due to which Gaikwad has been named as the skipper of the side.
This announcement has been made by BCCI and not by the franchise, interestingly. Ruturaj Gaikwad represented the Yellow Army in the pre-IPL captain’s conclave, which is being held in Chennai.
Before Ruturaj, it was Ravindra Jadeja who was appointed as the skipper of the franchise, but he left the captaincy in mid-season in 2022, and Dhoni was made captain again of the side.
An official statement from CSk has been given on their website, which states, “MS Dhoni has handed over Chennai Super Kings’ captaincy to Ruturaj Gaikwad ahead of the start of TATA IPL 2024. Ruturaj has been an integral part of the Chennai Super Kings since 2019 and has played 52 matches in the IPL during this period.”
The statement further added, “The team looks forward to the upcoming season.”
Ms. Dhoni has helped CSK win the IPL title five times, which is his joint highest as the captain in the IPL.
