Assessing David Lloyd’s Critique of India’s T20 World Cup 2024 Chances

Former England cricketer David Lloyd has dismissed India’s potential in the 2024 T20 World Cup, which begins on June 2 in the USA and the West Indies. Notably, despite consistently making it to the knockout stages, India has had a miserable record in ICC events since 2013. In that time, they have failed to win a single trophy.

Lloyd believes the “Men in Blue” will not have a significant effect on the World Cup since they are a “predictable team” ahead of the competition. He said that the team’s elite players would make opponents nervous, but he also said that they wouldn’t be taking many chances.

The team is quite predictable. There are still shackles on. The opposition should recognize the quality—these are really good players, in my opinion. But neither the bat nor the ball is being risked by them. Thus, you would consider them to be “well, they might have their moments,” but they wouldn’t pose a serious threat, according to Lloyd on the TalkSport Cricket Podcast.

The future of the senior Indian players in the T20 team was a topic of much controversy prior to the event. The great batting tandem of Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma, who will be competing in the forthcoming competition, was nevertheless once again given the green light by the Indian selection committee. The youthful finisher Rinku Singh had to be moved to the reserves in order to make room for the batting mainstays in the squad.

Rohit, who had a forgettable campaign in the tournament’s previous year, will lead the team as captain. In the 2022 edition, the leadoff hitter amassed 116 runs from six innings with a strike rate of 106.42 and an average of 19.33, with a single half-century versus the Netherlands.

However, Virat Kohli’s strike rate in T20Is was widely criticized for falling short of modern-day cricket norms. In the first half of the Indian Premier League 2024, the 35-year-old faced criticism for his lethargic play. However, he eventually silenced his detractors with a better strike rate in the second half of the season.

Even though India has the greatest T20 league in the world, they haven’t won a T20 World Cup since 2007. As the forthcoming match is perceived as the final one for the senior batting pair, Rohit and Kohli will be keen to disprove the doubters and assist India in ending their trophy drought at the ICC.
