Why did Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma got demoted to Group B in the central contracts of BCCI

The BCCI central contract arrangement has given Group B status to Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma while eliminating the A+ category that provided a retention payment of Rs 7 crore. The BCCI on Monday awarded central contract to 30 men and 21 women cricketers classified in group A, B and C. Player performance and total games played in the previous season determine the central contract assessment cycle.

The organization maintained Group A status for Shubman Gill and Jasprit Bumrah and Ravindra Jadeja who plays as a Test all-rounder.

The BCCI did not disclose the total amount of retainership fees that applied to the three contract categories. The previous value of group A at Rs 5 crore and group B at Rs 3 crore and group C at Rs 1 crore became obsolete after the organization eliminated A+.

Kohli and Rohit became one-format players after retiring from Tests and T20Is which means they did not meet the criteria for top category retention.

The former Committee of Administrators COA created A+ grading system at the request of Mahendra Singh Dhoni who used to be the captain of the Indian national team. The category required players to demonstrate excellence in all three formats of cricket but only four players achieved this standard which included Kohli, Rohit, Jadeja and Bumrah.

Jemimah Rodrigues received a promotion to group A.

Harmanpreet Kaur, Deepti Sharma and Smriti Mandhana maintained their top position in the women’s list while India World Cup player Jemimah Rodrigues received a promotion from group B to A for her excellent semi-final performance against Australia.

Sneh Rana has also moved up to group B where she joins Shafali Verma, Richa Ghosh, and Renuka Singh Thakur.

There were 13 cricketers in group C. As of now, women’s central contract retainership fees are Rs 50 lakh, Rs 30 lakh and Rs 10 lakh respectively.
