Sunil Gavaskar drops a massive bombshell on Shubman Gill’s test team

Shubman Gill’s first match as captain of the Indian cricket team didn’t go as planned. India lost the first Test of a five-match series against England by 5 wickets on Tuesday. Even with five players making centuries, India couldn’t secure the win on the last day. The batting order struggled, key catches were missed, and the bowlers weren’t consistent enough, allowing England to take a 1-0 lead.

England’s opener Ben Duckett had a standout performance, scoring 149 runs off 170 balls, which included 21 fours and a clever reverse-sweep six off Ravindra Jadeja. Alongside Zak Crawley’s 65, which helped get their opening partnership to 188, and useful contributions from Joe Root with 53 and Jamie Smith with 44, England made chasing a tricky target of 371 look pretty straightforward.

Former Indian captain Sunil Gavaskar shared his thoughts on the loss. “Credit to England. Even with five Indian batsmen scoring centuries, England had more confidence, and that helped them take the last few wickets. Those extra runs could’ve made a real difference. Our fielding wasn’t great, and it didn’t look like Test standard, he said on Sony Sports.

Gavaskar acknowledged that the pitch was good for batting and that it was hard to blame the bowlers. He noted that Bumrah bowled well, but having tighter support would have made a big difference. He remains hopeful that the team will learn from this loss with eight days before the next match. He encouraged players to skip optional practice in favor of serious training. “You can take a couple of days off, but then you need to get back to focused practice. You’re here to play for India, so practice hard,” he advised.

He mentioned Cheteshwar Pujara’s decision to join optional practice in the past, pointing out that some people, including coaches, didn’t quite get why he was doing it.
