“It is all Me, Me, Me…”: Tim Paine Criticized Ben Stokes On His ODI Comeback

Former Australia cricket captain Tim Paine has expressed his thoughts on Ben Stokes’ surprising return to ODI cricket after a thirteen-month retirement. Stokes’ decision to come back and join the ODI squad for the New Zealand tour and the upcoming ICC World Cup 2023 in India has garnered mixed reactions from the cricketing world.

While many welcomed Stokes’ return, Paine had a different perspective. He commented that he found Stokes’ decision interesting, suggesting it seemed self-centred. Paine perceived Stokes was picking and choosing when and where he wanted to play without considering the impact on other players.

Paine said, “I found Stokes coming out of retirement interesting. It was a bit of ‘Me, me, me.’ It felt like I would pick and choose where I want to play and when I want to play.”

Paine also expressed concern for the player who had been working hard for the past twelve months and now might miss out on participating in the ICC World Cup 2023 due to Stokes’ return. He pointed out the potential dilemma of telling a player who has dedicated a significant amount of time to the team that they would need to sit on the bench to accommodate someone who had been absent from the format for over a year.

“What do you say to the guy who has been playing for 12 months? ‘Sorry, thanks. But you can now sit on the bench because I want to play now.” Paine added.

Stokes’ return to the ODI squad has reportedly affected young cricketer Harry Brook, who was not included in England’s preliminary squad for the ICC World Cup 2023 due to Stokes’ comeback. The situation raises questions about the balance between the return of experienced players and the opportunities for promising talents within the team.

The reactions to Stokes’ decision underline the complex dynamics of team selections, player retirements, and comebacks in cricket, sparking discussions about fairness, team morale, and the long-term implications of such choices.
