2023 ODI World Cup: ‘You Guys Have Created That Mahaul Outside That…’, Shreyas Iyer Hits Back At Journalist After His Heroic 82-run Knock Against Sri Lanka

Star middle-order batter of team India Shreyas Iyer boldly denied the statement that he faces struggle while playing the short ball. While talking to a press conference after his heroic 82 runs in just 56 balls against Sri Lanka, Iyer blamed the media for spreading the rumor that the batter can’t bat against the short ball.

In match number 33 of the 2023 World Cup, India convincingly defeated Sri Lanka by a staggering 302-run margin at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai on Thursday, November 2. India batted first and scored 357/8 where apart from Shubman Gill(92) and Virat Kohli(88), Iyer also played a superb knock for the team.

During a post-match press conference, the Indian cricket team batter was questioned about his perceived difficulties with short-pitched deliveries. In response, he categorically refuted the notion that he had no issues with such deliveries.

“The short ball has been a problem for you since the beginning of this World Cup…”

Then Shreyas Iyer cut his question and asked, “When you say it’s a problem for me, what do you mean?”

The journalist went on to clarify that it wasn’t necessarily a problem, but rather a challenge that he had faced with short-pitched deliveries. For this Iyer replied, “Troubled me? Have you seen how many pull shots I’ve scored, especially those that have gone for four? If you’re trying to hit a ball, you’re bound to get out anyway, irrespective of if it’s a short ball, or if it’s overpitched. If I get bowled two or three times, you all would say, ‘he can’t play an in-swinging ball, he can’t play a cut if the ball is seaming”.

“We as players, are bound to get out on any sort of deliveries. You guys have created that mahal [atmosphere] outside that ‘he can’t play a short ball’, and I feel that people are picking that up every now and then and it plays on your [the media’s] mind regularly, and you keep working on that,” he added.
