2023 ODI World Cup: ‘It’s The Dumbest Idea Of The Cricketers’, Glenn Maxwell Showed His Disappointment On Light Shows

Australian all-rounder Glenn Maxwell’s remarkable century in Australia’s historic win against the Netherlands in the 24th match of the current World Cup gave fans a reason to enjoy. He achieved this century in just 40 balls, making it the fourth fastest in the history of One Day Internationals (ODIs) and the fastest ever in a World Cup game. For this, he earned the man of the match award.

Despite his century against the Netherlands and a win, Maxwell showed his disappointment for the mid-innings light displays, which have become a common occurrence in certain World Cup matches. Spectators at the Delhi stadium observed Maxwell shielding his eyes from the dazzling performance.

In response to questions about his aversion to the light show, Maxwell was quite concerned. He revealed that a prior experience with a similar display had led to severe headaches during a Big Bash game at Perth Stadium. He strongly criticised the inclusion of such distractions in a cricket match, particularly when players must maintain their focus on rapidly moving cricket balls and make quick adjustments to their vision.

While talking to Wisden, Maxwell said,”Well, something like that light show similar happened at Perth Stadium during a Big Bash game. I just felt like it gave me shocking headaches and it takes me a while for my eyes to readjust. I just think it’s the dumbest idea for cricketers when you’ve got this thing coming at you quickly and your eyes take so long to adjust and I think we just lost a wicket and the Perth Stadium lights went nuts.”

“was at the other end and it took me ages to get my eyes to go again and I felt like I had a headache – so I just try and cover up as much as I possibly can and ignore it but it’s a horrible, horrible idea,” he added.
