Ahead of the IPL 2024 auction, the Mumbai Indians named Hardik Pandya as their new captain, marking his return to the team after a two-year hiatus. Pandya's appointment as captain, replacing Rohit Sharma, stirred controversy among fans.
While some viewed it as a progressive decision, supporters of Rohit Sharma voiced criticism of the move. Tensions heightened when Rohit's wife, Ritika Sajdeh, contradicted MI coach Mark Boucher's explanation for Rohit's captaincy removal in an Instagram post, further fueling speculation.
Rohit Sharma took on the captaincy role for MI in the 2013 season, leading the team to five titles in the prestigious tournament. The team's most recent title victory occurred in the 2022 season. This marks the first leadership change for the team in 11 years.
Speaking on Star Sports Yuvraj Singh highlighted Rohit Sharma's remarkable success as captain in the IPL and advocated for a more gradual transition. Singh suggested that Sharma should have remained as captain for another season, with Hardik Pandya assuming the role of vice-captain.
“Rohit Sharma is a five-time IPL winner as captain. Removing him is a big decision. I would’ve probably got into something, for example, Hardik. But I would have given Rohit another season and let Hardik be vice-captain, and see how the whole franchise worked,” Yuvraj said.

“But obviously, I understand from the franchise point of view, that they have to see the future. But again, Rohit is still the Indian captain, and he’s playing really well. So, it’s a big decision.
“Everybody has an opinion, but the franchise has to take the right call for the future. I guess it was in that interest, and I hope they do well,” he added.
