The Indian Premier League (IPL) witnessed an exhilarating season culminating in Chennai Super Kings (CSK) emerging victorious, clinching their fifth title. However, amidst the celebration and triumph, questions loom over the future of former India skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni, who has been an integral part of the CSK franchise.
Franchise CEO Kasi Viswanathan recently broke his silence on Dhoni’s future, shedding light on the uncertainties surrounding the legendary cricketer’s role in the upcoming 17th edition of the IPL.
Throughout the IPL 2023 season, Dhoni, already in the twilight phase of his illustrious career, played with a heavily strapped left knee. Despite reports of the injury hindering his performance, the 41-year-old veteran showcased his determination by participating in every match for the Yellow Brigade. However, the seriousness of Dhoni’s knee injury became a concern, prompting CSK CEO Kasi Viswanathan to address the issue.
Viswanathan confirmed that Dhoni would seek medical advice for his left knee injury before deciding about his future with the Chennai-based franchise. The possibility of surgery was mentioned, but Viswanathan emphasized that it would depend on the medical reports and ultimately be Dhoni’s call. The CSK management respects Dhoni’s judgment and is supportive of his well-being.
“Yes, it is true that Dhoni will take medical advice for his left knee injury and accordingly decide. If surgery is advised, it can only be ascertained after reports come out; it will be completely his call,” Viswanathan was quoted as saying by the news agency PTI.
When questioned about the possibility of Dhoni opting out of featuring for CSK in the next season, which could potentially enhance the franchise’s auction purse, Viswanathan clarified that the CSK management had not entertained such thoughts. He reiterated that the decision would lie entirely with Dhoni and that the franchise respected his contributions and dedication.

“Frankly, we are not even thinking along those lines as we haven’t reached that stage. It will be completely Dhoni’s call. But I can tell you in CSK, and we haven’t entertained those thoughts,” Viswanathan said.
During the summit clash against GT, Dhoni achieved significant milestones in his IPL career. He completed his 250th appearance in the tournament, becoming the first Indian cricketer to achieve this feat. Additionally, Dhoni recorded 300 dismissals, making him the joint-most successful captain in IPL history. These milestones further solidify his iconic status in Indian cricket.
