Cricket Australia announced on Friday that the men’s Big Bash League would be reduced to 10 matches for each team. The board made this announcement after reaching an agreement with the broadcasters. This year, instead of 56, only 40 regular-season matches will be played in the league. Apart from league matches, the final series will also be shortened. Instead of five, now only four teams will enter the final series. However, its outline has not been decided yet.
This new provision will be added in BBL this summer itself. At present, the dates of BBL are yet to be announced. But due to the shortening of the tournament, it can now be played during the Christmas school holidays. This will also increase the chances of most foreign players participating in most matches.
BBL General Manager Alistair Dobson said, “With a shorter tournament we will be able to succeed in the aim of giving our best between the club and the fans. As a league, we are always looking at how we can innovate and develop ourselves. The draft method will be used to distribute players among the BBL franchises. The draft system was introduced last year to avoid free negotiation and now players will be selected by a lottery before September.”
