The first Women’s Premier League (WPL) player auction is scheduled to take place at the Jio World Convention Center in Mumbai today under Mallika Sagar, who has been nominated by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) for this historic event.
The auction will start at 2:30 PM IST and it will be an iconic one as 409 female players will be up for this auction out of which 163 of them are international players.
For those who don’t know, Mallika Sagar is a modern and contemporary Indian art consultant and collector based in Mumbai.
The first WPL auction’s auctioneer is also a partner in the company that provides advisors for Art India. She has extensive expertise running auctions for Mumbai’s Pundoles art gallery.
It is significant that when Mallika, aged 48, started working at Christie’s and held the inaugural sale of Modern Indian Art in New York in 2000, she was the first female auctioneer of Indian descent.
It’s interesting to note that she has experience in the sports industry because she previously oversaw the auction for the 2021 Pro Kabaddi League (PKL).
