“There was a time…” Former Indian Player Explains How Virat Kohli Became the ‘chase master’ After MS Dhoni’s Retirement

After the setback in the Asia Cup 2022, Indian team finally won the home series against Australia just before a month of the T20 World Cup. Virat Kohli played a blistering knock of 63 runs off 48 balls, helping India to chase the total in the last over. This win helped India to claim the three-match T20I series by 2-1. After returning to his form in Asia Cup 2022, Virat Kohli continued hammering the balls in this series against the kangaroos. Last night, he came to bat at no. 3 and smashed every bowler of visitors, but eventually, he was dismissed by Daniel Sams.

After the match, many former cricketers praised the former skipper for playing the fantastic knock. Ajay Jadeja, the former Indian cricketer said that, after MS Dhoni’s retirement, Virat became the run “chase master” for India.

“I mean, that’s the key to Indian cricket. I mean, there was a period where Virat Kohli would score runs, and if there were anything, MS Dhoni would finish it off at the end.” Ajay Jadeja said on Cricbuzz.

“But now with the personnel changing around Virat Kohli, it’s made it easier for him, and it’s made it easier for everyone else around him to play at a whole different ball game. The solidity that Virat Kohli provides, and for me it’s always been the solidity of Virat Kohli, not the striking ability. That’s why he is a chase master. He understands the pace of the game. He may not have the striking ability that many players have around the world and in that Indian team, but there is no one I know who has the consistency of Virat Kohli.”

“So if consistency is what you want, this is your man, and he’s not shown it today; he’s been showing it to you for 10, 12, 15 years. It’s just that when you expect him to do what the others do, that’s when the trouble begins, “he added.

However, Suryakumar Yadav also smashed 69 runs off 36 balls. Surya and Virat made a partnership of 104 runs for the 3rd wicket. Meanwhile, Australian opener Cameron Green played destructive innings of 52 runs, and Tim David finished with an entertaining knock of 54 runs; from the Indian side, Axar Patel took 3 wickets in his 4-over quota and restricted the dangerous kangaroos to 186 runs.

Ajay Jadeja also commented on, Virat’s poor performance before Asia Cup 2022. He mentioned how mental health is important to the player.

He said, “You know we heard before that Asia cup when he came out and talked about his issues. It was never the game; it was more mental and once you get over that barrier, it releases you, and since then, he’s just carried on doing what he does best. Of course, that hundred came, which surprised him more than anyone else because this format is not what he expected it to do. But it just takes the monkey off the bag, you know. That number of that 100 was there, so now even if it’s not 100, if it’s a 30, it looks good, it’s 60, looks good, everything else looks good. I think he’s found within that team confidence that this team has had with players.”

“Many people disagree with how they play or the style, but they seem happy in that position; they would like to play like that. I think that’s the ultimate because if you as players believe in something, even if it’s wrong or right, somebody else may think it’s wrong or but unless you believe it’s right, it’s not going to happen as often as some you’re doing it because somebody else believes this right. Yes, this is one thing you see out of this team coming out, ” he further added.
