T20 World Cup 2024: Sandeep Lamichhane Once Again In Limelight, Denied US Visa

The controversy with Nepal spinner Sandeep Lamichhane continues as the Cricket Association of Nepal announced on Thursday that Nepal spinner Sandeep Lamichhane was denied a visa by the United States Embassy. They said it’s very unlikely he will play in the upcoming T20 World Cup.

In May, Lamichhane was cleared of rape charges stemming from an accusation involving an 18-year-old woman in 2022. Nepal’s first T20 World Cup match is scheduled against the Netherlands in Dallas on June 4.

Last week, the former captain called the visa denial “unfortunate.” A member of the Cricket Association of Nepal, Chhumbi Lama confirmed that their later attempts to get a US visa for Lamichhane also failed.

While talking to AFP, Lama said, “There is a slim – or no chance – for him to be involved in the World Cup. The Cricket Association of Nepal had lobbied the US embassy through different Nepal government agencies, but the visa was denied.”

Lamichhane was once a star cricketer in Nepal, but he did not make it in the original squad because of a rape conviction from an incident at a Kathmandu hotel in 2023.
