Sunil Gavaskar Picked The Wicket-Keeper For The Indian Team In WTC Final

The final of the World Test Championship 2023 will be played between India and Australia in the Oval, London. On the last day of the 4th test match, India got big news that they had qualified for the finals of WTC irrespective of their result against Australia. This is because New Zealand beat Sri Lanka by two wickets in a thrilling encounter. However, the fourth and last test match ended in a draw, and the Indian team won the series by 2-1.

The biggest problem for the Indian team is that their two-star players, Jasprit Bumrah and Rishabh Pant, will not be available for the WTC final. Both the players are recovering from the injury, and we might see them on the field in the ODI World Cup 2023.

In the absence of Pant, KS Bharat is playing in the team, and he missed leaving his impression in the BGT Trophy. In the fifth match, he dropped the catch, after which the Indian fans trolled him. Looking at his performance, India’s legendary cricketer Sunil Gavaskar advised the Indian team to pick KL Rahul as the wicketkeeper because he has batting abilities too.

“You can see KL Rahul as a wicketkeeper. If he bats at No.5 or 6 in the Oval (in the WTC final), our batting will be stronger because he batted well in England last year. He scored a century at the Lord’s. Keep KL Rahul in mind when you pick your XI for the WTC final,” Gavaskar told Sports Tak.

However, KL Rahul was dropped in the third and fourth test matches due to bad performance in the first two test matches. And before the third test match started, the vice-captaincy role was snatched from him. But he has a century to his name in the Lords and can perform better in the overseas pitches. Observing all these, Sunil Gavaskar added that picking Rahul in your team provides more strength in batting. And he has also highlighted the comment of Dinesh Karthik on KS Bharat.

“Dinesh Karthik summed up the problems with his wicketkeeping quite beautifully (during commentary). The real test of a wicketkeeper is on pitches like these, where the ball is turning. If you look at Travis Head’s dismissal, when the ball turned and hit his stumps, KS Bharat’s gloves were nowhere near the ball. That means if the ball hadn’t hit the stumps, it would have resulted in 4 byes. This is a cause for concern. Whether they will select him in the XI is up to the selection committee, but in England, you won’t get pitches where the keeper has to stand up to the stumps. In that case, you can pick KL Rahul as a wicketkeeper, and even Ishan Kishan can be considered. Their batting is better than Bharat’s,” he added in the last to the Sports Tak.
