Sunil Gavaskar, the Indian cricket legend, compared Indian cricketer Rishabh Pant with Spanish tennis star Carlos Alcaraz. He said both are unpredictable and have a talent that makes them fan favourites.
Gavaskar is in London for India’s Test series against England. He went to Wimbledon and spoke about what Pant and Alcaraz have in common.
Alcaraz moves well and has all the shots. He sometimes tries to be a showman, like when he tries to play drop shots when he should finish the point, Gavaskar told Star Sports. But that’s what people want to see. It’s like watching Rishabh Pant. You never know what to expect with Pant and it’s the same with Alcaraz, that’s why he’s so exciting.
Gavaskar visits Wimbledon often and goes to the tennis courts more than Lord’s Cricket Ground when India isn’t playing there. He told Vijay Amritraj, I come to Wimbledon every time I’m in England at this time but I rarely come to Lord’s unless India is playing. So, you could say I’m here more often.
When asked who he thought would win Wimbledon, Gavaskar said he couldn’t decide. I want Djokovic to win because winning a 25th Grand Slam would be amazing. But I think Alcaraz will win.
Virat Kohli, who recently retired from Test cricket, said something similar. He is rooting for Djokovic but praised both finalists. We’ve spoken and Novak has always been nice. I’d like to see Djokovic and Alcaraz in the final but it would be great for Novak to win this one. It would put him at the top of the all time discussion, Kohli said.
This summer, tennis and cricket are connected as fans watch their favourite athletes show respect and sportsmanship on and off the field.
