Sri-Lanka Cricket Board Suspended By ICC, Check The Big Reason Here

The recent suspension of Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) by the International Cricket Council (ICC) has sent shockwaves through the cricketing world. This move comes on the heels of a tumultuous period for the Sri Lankan cricket board.

The suspension was primarily attributed to what the ICC termed as ‘government interference.’ This interference breached the autonomy expected of a cricketing board, creating an unprecedented crisis within the SLC.

“The ICC Board met today and determined that Sri Lanka Cricket is in serious breach of its obligations as a Member, in particular, the requirement to manage its affairs autonomously and ensure that there is no government interference in the governance, regulation, and administration of cricket in Sri Lanka,” a release by cricket’s governing body stated.

The turmoil began with Sri Lanka’s dismal performance in the 2023 World Cup, culminating in a staggering defeat against India. Subsequently, the sports minister’s decision to dismiss the entire cricket board exacerbated the crisis. Despite reinstatement by the court of appeal, the board’s stability remained precarious.

The involvement of the government and opposition further complicated the situation. A joint resolution demanding the management’s resignation showcased the political rift over the matter. Proposals for a new governing body structure surfaced, adding to the complexity of the issue.

“Give me two days to disclose everything about it. This was the result of a conspiracy from outside,” as quoted by PTI.

Sri Lanka’s chief selector alleged an ‘outside conspiracy’ behind the team’s poor performance in the World Cup. Additionally, the team faced a cascade of injuries, forcing changes in the squad and even a mid-campaign change in captaincy.

Sri Lanka’s journey in the 2023 World Cup was marked by struggles, securing wins only against Netherlands and England. Injuries significantly impacted their gameplay, with the team currently placed ninth in the standings.
